Violence has once again hit the streets of the Greek capital as police and protesters clashed during a huge, anti-austerity rally. Protesters threw petrol bombs while police responded with tear-gas and flash bombs sending hundreds of protesters scrambling for cover. Two police and five civilians suffered injuries. Marches held to protest Greek government austerity measures ended in violence when riot police units attacked marchers in the centre of Greece northern port city of Thessaloniki. The rallies held as part of the country’s general strike were the target of tear gas, flash grenade (intended for use by anti-terrorist units in enclosed spaces) and the use of motorcycle units who were used to chase and intimidate demonstrators. Police clashed with stone-throwing demonstrators Wednesday as tens of thousands of people marched through Athens to protest austerity measures imposed by a government struggling to contain the country’s budget deficit crisis. Police fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse the crowds of demonstrators throwing Molotov cocktails, stones and bottles, covering the capital in clouds of choking smoke. Protests in Athens have turned violent on February 23 2011, as running battles between protesters and the police were raging outside Syntagma Square, at Omonia Square, outside the Politehnio University on Patission street and other parts of the city. What started as sporadic scuffles between demonstrators and authorities have progressively spiralled out of control as the tension increased, media reports said. Television reports showed heavy battles between youths and the Greek riot police units, MAT, with both police officers and protesters being hit with Molotov cocktails.
