Protests in Athens have turned violent on February 23 2011, as running battles between protesters and the police were raging outside Syntagma Square, at Omonia Square, outside the Politehnio University on Patission street and other parts of the city. What started as sporadic scuffles between demonstrators and authorities have progressively spiralled out of control as the tension increased, media reports said. Television reports showed heavy battles between youths and the Greek riot police units, MAT, with both police officers and protesters being hit with Molotov cocktails. Stones, bottles, tear gas and stung grenades were echoing across central Athens. (sofiaecho)
