How Music Traveled: An Interactive Infographic

How Music Travels is an interactive infographic by travel and holiday services company Thomson. The infographic provides a lens into how larger entertainment and media trends circulated from culture to culture, focusing exclusively on music. In addressing ‘influencer musical genres,’ Thomson writes:
It is often difficult to pin-point the beginning of a genre to a single year, so we have placed the birth of each genre within five-year periods. When the explosion of dance music arrived in the 80s, many genres arrived in the same five-year period as the genres they influenced. In this situation, the ‘influencer’ genre starts to fade in on the map at the time the influencing line appears.
Starting off in the Caribbean, Africa, and India, Thomson’s infographic provides a scan of music styles and their circulation around the world. While each decade adds a layer of complexity, many subgenres are ignored for the sake of legibility. Click below to check it out and share!
